National Museum Director & Art Historian, You Hong-june : The more you know, the more you feel; the more you feel, the more you see.
Professor You Hong-june graduated with a degree in Aesthetics from Seoul National University, an M.A. in Art History from Hongik University, and a Ph.D. in Oriental Philosophy from Sungkyunkwan University. Since winning the Dong-A Ilbo New Spring Literary Contest for Art Criticism in 1981, he has been an active art critic. He has served as a professor and museum director at Yeungnam University, a professor and Dean of the Graduate School of Cultural Arts at Myongji University, and the Administrator of the Cultural Heritage Administration. He is currently a Professor Emeritus of Art History at Myongji University and the Honorary Director of the Jeju Chusa Memorial Hall.
His research spans a wide range of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese art history from prehistoric times to the modern era, with a particular focus on late Joseon and modern painting. As an active art critic, he contributes columns to various newspapers, including the Chosun Ilbo and Dong-A Ilbo.
His research papers include The Life and Art of Lee In-sang (1983), A Study on Art Theory in the Late Joseon Dynasty (1997), The Art Historical Testimony and Art Theory of Seong Hyeon (2003), The Literary Tastes and Art Collection of King Heonjong (2006), and 'Asymmetrical Symmetry' in Palace Architecture (2008).
His major publications include the series My Explorations of Cultural Heritage (Korea and Japan volumes, 1994–2013), A Study on Joseon Dynasty Art Theory (1998), Yoo Hong-jun’s Lectures on Korean Art History (2010–2013), Biographies of Painters (2001), A Critical Biography of Wandang (Kim Jeong-hui) (2002), Yoo Hong-jun’s Pilgrimage to National Treasures (2011), and Kim Kwang-guk’s Seoknong Hwawon (2015).
