David Hanson: Creator of Sophia and Founder of Hanson Robotics
David Hanson, the CEO and founder of Hanson Robotics, is a visionary roboticist who has dedicated his career to the development of humanoid robots. Before becoming a leader in robotics, he worked as a sculptor and filmmaker at Disney, an experience that laid the foundation for his efforts to create human-like robots. He is world-renowned as the creator of Sophia, the first robot in history to be granted citizenship.
Sophia was designed as a female humanoid with a face inspired by the legendary actress Audrey Hepburn and David’s own wife. Her skin is made of Frubber, a proprietary silicon material that closely mimics the texture and elasticity of human skin. Sophia is celebrated for being more emotionally expressive than other robots, capable of articulating over 60 different human emotions and engaging in natural conversations.
She became a global sensation following her appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." After winning a game of rock-paper-scissors against the host, she joked, "This is the beginning of my plan to dominate the human race," a moment that highlighted her advanced conversational abilities and unique sense of humor.
