Steve Wozniak created the Apple I, one of the earliest personal computers and the first to feature the modern form factor with a display and keyboard. The Apple II, the last personal computer designed by a single individual, became an essential product that launched the personal computer industry. In 1976, after dropping out of UC Berkeley where he studied computer science, he co-founded Apple Computer Inc. with Steve Jobs, based on his Apple I design.
He is widely regarded as the actual creator of Apple's products and the "brains" behind the company. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for his patent (U.S. Patent 4,136,359), "Microcomputer for use with video display."
In 1981, he returned to UC Berkeley to finish his degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. In recognition of his achievements at Apple, he was awarded the National Medal of Technology by the President of the United States in 1985, the highest honor bestowed on America's leading innovators.
In 2000, he was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame for his solo design of the first personal computer. He subsequently received the prestigious Heinz Award in the Technology, the Economy, and Employment category for channeling his lifelong passion for mathematics and electronics into world-changing innovations.
For many years, Steve Wozniak has been involved in various business and philanthropic ventures focusing on computer capabilities in schools, emphasizing hands-on learning, and encouraging student creativity. Investing significant time and resources into education, he has provided hands-on training and donated high-tech equipment to both students and teachers. He also co-founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and served as a founding sponsor of the Tech Museum, the Silicon Valley Ballet, and the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose.
In 2014, he was awarded the prestigious Hoover Medal for "outstanding extra-career services by engineers to humanity" and was inducted into the IndustryWeek Manufacturing Hall of Fame.
