Pyo Chang-won: Criminal Profiler & Crime Analysis Expert
Professor Pyo Chang-won is a renowned criminal psychologist, former police officer, and former politician who has built significant public recognition through his diverse career. His professional journey spans roles as a law enforcement officer, academic, member of the National Assembly, and currently, the Director of the Pyo Institute of Crime Science (PICS).
Prof. Pyo graduated from the Korean National Police University (KNPU) and later earned his Master’s and Ph.D. in Police Studies from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. During his tenure as a police officer, he served as a detective, and from 1999 to 2012, he shared his expertise as a professor at KNPU.
After transitioning from his professorship, he became a household name as the Director of PICS, appearing on numerous television programs to provide expert crime analysis. Expanding his creative horizons, he debuted as a novelist in December 2024 with the publication of his mystery thriller, Castrato. His other notable publications include Profiler Pyo Chang-won’s Case Files, CSI in Korea, and Lazy Justice.
In 2015, he entered politics with the Democratic Party of Korea and was elected to the 20th National Assembly. Following the end of his term, he returned to his roots in criminal analysis and research. Since August 2023, he has been serving as a Special Professor in the Department of Convergence Investigative Science at Hallym University, where he continues to inspire the next generation of forensic experts.
